How to see how full your Gemini chat is

AI Toolbox shows a small ring called Context above the round AI Toolbox button. It estimates how much of the chat Gemini can still keep in mind. Click it to see the tokens used and set your Gemini plan. The meter is free. Carrying a long chat into a fresh chat is Premium.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Open a chat

Open any chat on the left side of Gemini, or start typing in a new one.

You should see: The chat on the page.

  2. Step 2: Find the ring above the AI Toolbox button

Look at the bottom-right corner of the page. Above the round AI Toolbox button is a small ring with the word Context. The ring fills as the chat grows. If you moved the button, the ring moves with it.

You should see: A small ring next to the word Context.

The ring shows on the home page, chat pages and Gem pages, once the chat has some text.

  3. Step 3: Click the ring

Click the ring to open the details.

You should see: A card called Context Meter with a line like 5K of 32K tokens.

  4. Step 4: Set your Gemini plan

Near the bottom of the card are four small buttons: Auto, Free, AI Plus and AI Pro/Ultra. They are about your Gemini plan from Google, not AI Toolbox.

On free Gemini, leave Auto or pick Free (32K). With Google AI Plus, pick AI Plus (128K). With Google AI Pro or Ultra, pick AI Pro/Ultra (1M).

You should see: The token total changes to match the plan you picked.

  5. Step 5: Watch for warnings

As the chat gets long, the card says Context is filling up, then Context window is nearly full. After that, Gemini may start to forget the start of the chat.

You should see: The ring changes color as it fills.

  6. Step 6: Move to a fresh chat (Premium)

Click Continue in a fresh chat. AI Toolbox writes a short summary and puts it in a new Gemini chat, so you keep going without the old length.

On the free plan this part is locked. You can start a new chat by hand and use @@ to bring in the old one.

You should see: A new chat with the summary in the message box, ready to send.

That's it. You have finished every tutorial in this section.

If something doesn't look right

I don't see the ring

The ring only shows on the Gemini home page, chat pages and Gem pages, once the chat has some text. It is hidden on the search page. If it is still missing, open the AI Toolbox button, click Settings, and turn on Show the context meter.

I pay for Google AI Pro but it shows 32K

AI Toolbox cannot tell your Gemini plan from the page, so Auto uses the free size. Click the ring and pick AI Pro/Ultra to use the 1M size of Google AI Pro and Ultra. Your choice is remembered.

I have Google AI Plus

Google lists 128K for Google AI Plus. Click the ring and pick AI Plus so the meter uses 128K. Your choice is remembered.

The number does not match Gemini exactly

The meter is an estimate based on the text in the chat. Files and images you added are not counted, so treat it as a guide, not an exact count.

Does 32K tokens mean AI Toolbox limits my chat?

No. The number is Gemini's own limit on how much of a chat it can keep in mind. AI Toolbox never limits your chats, searches or exports.

Free and Premium

The meter and its warnings are free. Continue in a fresh chat, which summarizes a long chat into a new one, and Carry this chat forward are Premium.

  • Free: the meter, the token count and the warnings.
  • Premium: Continue in a fresh chat, the estimate of messages left, and Carry this chat forward from a chat's menu.
  • Sizes used: 32K for free Gemini, 128K for Google AI Plus and 1M for Google AI Pro and Ultra. The count is an estimate.

What Gemini does on its own

Google's help page lists Gemini's context window by plan: 32K tokens on the free plan, 128K on Google AI Plus, and 1 million on Google AI Pro and Ultra. Gemini does not show how much of that a chat has used.

AI Toolbox estimates it for the chat you are in, warns you before it fills up, and on Premium carries the chat into a fresh one.

Questions people ask

What is Gemini's context window?

The context window is how much of a chat Gemini can keep in mind at once. Google lists 32K tokens for free Gemini, 128K for Google AI Plus and 1 million for Google AI Pro and Ultra. The free AI Toolbox Context Meter estimates how much of it a chat uses.

How do I know when a Gemini chat is too long?

Install AI Toolbox and look at the small Context ring above the AI Toolbox button in the bottom-right corner. It fills as the chat grows and warns you with Context is filling up, then Context window is nearly full. That is a good time to start a new chat.

Why does the Context Meter show 32K when I pay for Gemini?

AI Toolbox cannot read your Google plan from the Gemini page, so Auto uses the free 32K size. Click the ring and choose AI Plus for 128K, or AI Pro/Ultra for 1M. Those buttons describe your Gemini plan from Google, not AI Toolbox.

Is the Gemini Context Meter free?

Yes. The AI Toolbox Context Meter, its token count and its warnings are free for everyone on Gemini. Premium adds Continue in a fresh chat, which summarizes a long chat into a new one, an estimate of messages left, and Carry this chat forward.

How do I continue a long Gemini chat in a new one?

With AI Toolbox Premium, click the Context ring and choose Continue in a fresh chat, or use Carry this chat forward in a chat's menu on the left. A summary goes into a new chat. On the free plan, start a new chat and type @@ to bring in the old one.
