Step by step

  1. Step 1: Open Manage Prompts

Go to gemini.google.com. Click the round AI Toolbox button in the bottom-right corner of the page. A window called AI Toolbox opens with a list of features.

    Click Manage Prompts.

You should see: A window called Manage Prompts with the tip Type // in the chat box to insert a saved prompt.

  2. Step 2: Start a new prompt

Click the New prompt button (it has a + in front).

You should see: Two boxes: Name and Prompt.

  3. Step 3: Write and save the prompt

Type a short name, for example Summarize. In the Prompt box, write the full text you want to reuse. Click Add.

Want a blank to fill in each time? Put a word in double curly braces, like {{topic}}.

You should see: Your prompt in the list. On the free plan, a bar also shows how many of your 2 prompts you have used.

  4. Step 4: Type // in Gemini's message box

Close the window. Click in Gemini's message box at the bottom of the page and type //. Start a new line or add a space first if there is text before it.

Keep typing after // to filter the list by name.

You should see: A list of your saved prompts right above the message box.

  5. Step 5: Pick a prompt

Click the prompt you want. You can also use the arrow keys and press Enter or Tab. Any text you typed before stays in the box.

You should see: The prompt's text in Gemini's message box, in place of the //.

  6. Step 6: Fill in the blanks (if asked)

If the prompt has blanks like {{topic}}, a small window with the prompt's name opens and asks for each one. Type a value for each one and click Insert.

You should see: The prompt in the message box with your words in place of the blanks.

  7. Step 7: Send it

Read the message, change anything you like, and press Enter or click Gemini's send button.

To change or remove a saved prompt later, open Manage Prompts and click Edit or Delete.

You should see: Gemini answers your prompt as usual.

That's it. You have finished every tutorial in this section.

If something doesn't look right

Typing // does nothing

Put a space or a new line before //, then type it again. If the list still does not open, open the AI Toolbox button, click Settings, and under Prompts make sure Prompt tools is on. Then refresh the Gemini page.

An upgrade window opened when I clicked New prompt

The free plan keeps 2 saved prompts. Delete one you no longer need in Manage Prompts to make room, or upgrade to Premium for an unlimited number.

Manage Prompts is missing from the AI Toolbox window

It is hidden when Prompt tools is off. Open the AI Toolbox button, click Settings, and under Prompts turn on Prompt tools. Manage Prompts, Manage Chains and Prompt Library come back in the list.

Where else can I use my saved prompts?

Your saved prompts are stored with your AI Toolbox account, so they also show up on ChatGPT, Claude and Grok. If you would rather keep them on this computer only, go to Settings, then Prompts, and turn on Keep my Prompt Library on this device.

Free and Premium

The free plan keeps 2 saved prompts. Premium keeps an unlimited number.

  • Free: 2 saved prompts.
  • Premium: unlimited saved prompts.
  • Blanks in double curly braces, like {{topic}}, are asked for each time you use the prompt.

What Gemini does on its own

Gemini has Gems: you write instructions once, add files if you like, and save it, so every chat with that Gem follows those instructions. Gemini also offers premade Gems to start from.

AI Toolbox saved prompts are for text you paste into any chat, including a chat with a Gem. Type // and the prompt drops into your message, with blanks you fill in each time.
