How to see your Claude usage limits while you chat

AI Toolbox shows your Claude usage where you type. On paid Claude plans, a thin bar under the message box shows the limit closest to full and when it resets. Click the round button and choose Plan usage to see your Current session and Weekly limit bars. On a free Claude plan, it counts the messages you sent. It is free.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Look under the message box

Open a chat or a new chat. On a paid Claude plan, a thin bar with a short line of text shows under the box where you type. It gives a percent, which limit it is, and when it resets.

You should see: A percent, the name of the limit (for example Weekly limit) and a reset time. The color gets stronger as you get close to the limit.

  2. Step 2: Open the Plan usage window

Open claude.ai on a new chat or an open chat. In the bottom-right corner of the page there is a round AI Toolbox button. Click it. A list of features opens. Click Plan usage.

You should see: A window called Plan usage.

  3. Step 3: Read your bars

Current session is Claude's five-hour limit. Weekly limit is the limit for the whole week. Each bar shows how much you used and when it resets, for example Resets in 2h 15m.

You should see: Two bars with a percent and a reset time.

  4. Step 4: On a free Claude plan, read your message count

Claude does not share usage figures on its free plan. So AI Toolbox counts the messages you send on this computer. You see Current session with your messages in the last 5 hours, and Last 7 days.

These counts show how much you used, not how much is left.

You should see: Your message counts and a short note that explains where they come from.

That's it. You have finished every tutorial in this section.

If something doesn't look right

I don't see the bar under the message box

The bar only shows when Claude reports usage figures, which it does on paid plans. On a free Claude plan, open Plan usage from the round button to see your message counts instead.

The window shows View usage on Claude instead of bars

Claude did not send any figures this time. Click View usage on Claude to open Claude's own usage page, or close the window and try again in a minute.

The numbers differ from Claude's page

The bar refreshes once a minute, so it can be a minute behind. On a free Claude plan, the counts are kept by AI Toolbox and will not match Claude exactly.

The percent changed when I switched model

Some Claude plans have a weekly limit for a single model. The bar always shows the limit closest to full for the model you picked, and names it.

Free and Premium

Plan usage is free for every AI Toolbox user. What it shows depends on your Claude plan: paid Claude plans get Claude's own figures, and free Claude plans get a message count kept by AI Toolbox on this computer.

  • Free for every AI Toolbox user.
  • Paid Claude plans: Claude's own session and weekly figures, refreshed once a minute.
  • Free Claude plans: messages counted by AI Toolbox on this computer, not Claude's remaining limit.

What Claude does on its own

Claude shows usage on its own page. On Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans, Settings, then Usage, shows progress bars for your five-hour session and weekly limits.

AI Toolbox puts the same figures under the message box, so you see them before you start a long task, and names the limit that is closest to full.

Questions people ask

How do I check my Claude usage limit?

Claude shows usage bars in Settings, then Usage, on paid plans. With AI Toolbox you can see them without leaving the chat: a thin bar under the message box shows the limit closest to full, and the Plan usage window shows your session and weekly bars with reset times.

Does the usage bar work on the free Claude plan?

Claude does not report usage figures on its free plan, so the AI Toolbox bar under the message box does not appear there. Instead, the Plan usage window shows how many messages you sent in the current session and the last 7 days, counted by AI Toolbox on your computer.

Is Plan usage a Premium feature?

No. Plan usage in AI Toolbox is free for everyone on Claude, including the bar under the message box and the Plan usage window. What you see depends on your Claude plan, not on your AI Toolbox plan. Paid Claude plans get Claude's own figures.

What is the Claude current session limit?

Claude limits how much you can use it in a five-hour session, and some plans also have a weekly limit. The AI Toolbox Plan usage window shows both as bars with a percent and a reset time, taken from the figures Claude reports for your account.

How often does the Claude usage bar update?

AI Toolbox asks Claude for new usage figures at most once a minute per tab, then updates the bar under the message box. Claude's limits move over hours, so this is close enough to stay useful without sending extra requests from your account.
