How to Share a Claude Chat: Links and Invites (2026)
To share a Claude chat, open it on claude.ai and click Share in the upper right corner. You can invite specific people by email, which works on every plan, or, on Free, Pro and Max, share a public link that "anyone with the link can open," with no Claude account needed (Anthropic Help Center, September 2026). Either way, people see a view-only snapshot of the chat as it was when you shared it; messages you send afterward stay private until you update the shared chat.
This guide covers both ways to share, what the other person can and cannot see, how to stop sharing, how Team and Enterprise plans differ, and how to give someone a file instead of a link. Anthropic redesigned the share dialog in September 2026, so some older guides describe a Public and Private menu that has since changed. Every fact here is taken from Anthropic's Help Center, linked in the sources at the end.

Can You Share a Claude Conversation?
Yes. Claude has built-in sharing, and Anthropic offers two kinds: inviting specific people by email, and a public link. Anthropic calls the email invite "the default way to share a chat," because it "keeps it private to the people you choose." The public link is for when you want anyone to be able to open it.
Email invite: available on all plans, Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, on claude.ai on the web.
Public link: available on Free, Pro and Max. Anthropic says "Team and Enterprise members can only share chats inside their organization."
Both share a snapshot, not a live conversation. Anthropic says the snapshot "includes all messages that were sent prior to sharing the chat, including any artifacts," and "all messages sent after sharing a chat will remain private by default."
How to Share a Claude Chat With Specific People
Open the chat, click Share in the upper right corner, enter one or more email addresses under People with access, and click Send.
Open the chat on claude.ai in your browser.
Click Share in the upper right corner.
Under People with access, enter one or more email addresses.
Click Send.
The person signs in to open it, and Anthropic says "a free account is enough to view the chat." The invite only works for the address you entered: "If someone forwards the email, the link won't open for anyone else." Invites that are not opened expire after 30 days. Invited people also see your name as the person who shared the chat.
Sharing with specific people is not in the Claude mobile apps yet. Anthropic says it is "available on claude.ai on the web," and that "you can open a chat shared with you on any device."
How to Share a Claude Chat With a Public Link
On Free, Pro and Max plans, the same Share button can create a public link. Anthropic says "anyone with the link can open it. No Claude account is required." Open the chat, click Share, choose the public link option and copy the link. Anthropic's current articles describe the public link and its rules, but do not list a button-by-button sequence for the redesigned dialog, so follow the options the dialog shows you.
Before you send a public link, read Anthropic's own rule: "treat a public link as public. If you wouldn't post the contents on the open web, don't put them behind a public link." There is "no way to limit a public link to specific people," even if you only send it to one person. If you need that, use an email invite.
Anthropic does take steps to keep shared chats out of search results. Every shared chat page carries a "noindex" instruction, there is no public directory or sitemap of shared chats, and each link is "a long random string that can't be guessed." It also says third-party archive and scraping services may save their own copies, which its noindex instruction does not govern.
What the Person You Share With Can See
They see a view-only copy of the conversation up to the moment you shared it, including artifacts, but not the files you attached. Anthropic says shared chats are view only: "Recipients can't continue the chat, copy it to their account, or download files from it."
Messages: everything sent before you shared. Later messages stay private.
Artifacts: included in the snapshot.
Attached files: not included. Anthropic says the file "is not included in the shared snapshot and remains private." For email invites inside your own organization, attached files can be included.
Connector and MCP data: the raw data from tool calls stays hidden; viewers see only the final chat output and conversation.
To share newer messages, open the share dialog and click Update shared chat. Anthropic says this "replaces the old snapshot with the current one for everyone who has access."
How to Stop Sharing a Claude Chat
To stop sharing, open the share dialog and click Turn off; Anthropic says "the link stops working for everyone right away." To remove one invited person, find them under People with access and remove them.
On Free, Pro and Max plans you can see every chat you have shared in one place: go to Settings, Privacy, and click Manage next to Shared chats. The list shows each chat's title, the date you shared it and who has access, and you can turn off sharing for each one.
Deleting the original chat also ends sharing: Anthropic says "the shared snapshot is removed and the link stops working." Two things turning sharing off cannot undo. It "can't remove copies, screenshots, or archives someone else already made," and if a shared chat appears in search results, search engines drop it on their own recrawl schedule; Anthropic points to Google's Remove outdated content tool to speed that up. If you later move your personal account into a Team or Enterprise organization, Anthropic says public share links "stop working permanently."
Want to send someone a file instead of a link? AI Toolbox (formerly Claude Toolbox) exports any Claude chat as a TXT file on the free plan, and as Markdown, JSON or PDF on Premium, so you can attach it to an email or a ticket. 40,000+ users, 4.7/5 on the Chrome Web Store. Add AI Toolbox to Chrome →
Sharing Claude Chats on Team and Enterprise Plans
On Team and Enterprise, shared chats stay inside your organization. Anthropic says public links "aren't available," and you can only invite email addresses on your organization's domain. Under General access you can choose "Anyone at [your organization]," so any signed-in member with the link can view the chat.
Admins can turn off chat sharing for the whole organization, see and revoke shared chats, and view sharing activity in the audit log.
Projects are shared separately. On Team and Enterprise, a project can be shared with teammates at "Can view" or "Can edit," but Anthropic notes that "chats within a project are not shared by default." Each chat inside a shared project stays private until you share it yourself. Our guide to Claude Projects covers how projects work.
Sharing an Artifact Instead of the Whole Chat
Artifacts have their own Share button, separate from the chat. Anthropic says "artifacts start private to you. Nothing is shared until you share it." Open the artifact, click Share, choose who has access under Who has access, then copy the link. Sharing an artifact with anyone who has the link is available on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise (on Team and Enterprise only when an owner has turned on External sharing), and people you invite by email can get Can view, Commenter or Can edit access.
One difference from chat links: "Everyone needs a Claude account" to open a shared artifact. The exception is a legacy artifact made in a chat before September 16, 2026 and published on Free, Pro or Max, which anyone with the link can view without an account. Anthropic warns that you cannot publish a legacy artifact again after you unpublish it. For saving artifacts to your own computer, see our guide to downloading Claude artifacts.
Share a Link or Send a File? Your Options Compared
A share link keeps the conversation on Claude; an export gives you a file you control. Which one fits depends on whether the other person should see it on claude.ai or keep their own copy.

How AI Toolbox Helps When a Link Is Not Enough
AI Toolbox adds one-click export to Claude, so you can hand someone a file of exactly the chat they need, even when they will not sign in to claude.ai or your plan does not allow public links.
Single chat export: any Claude chat as TXT on the free plan; Markdown, JSON or PDF on Premium. See exporting a Claude chat to PDF.
Find the chat first: full-text search across your Claude history, 5 results per search free and unlimited on Premium, plus folders, 2 free and unlimited on Premium. See searching Claude conversations.
Premium is $9.99 per month or $99 once for the Claude module. These are extension features in Chrome, not a Claude subscription, and AI Toolbox never shares a chat on your behalf.
Limitations and What Claude's Own Sharing Does Well
Claude's sharing is built in, free on every plan and quick to revoke, and for most cases it is all you need. Its limits are the ones Anthropic documents: shared chats are view only, attached files are left out, public links are not available on Team and Enterprise, email invites cannot be sent from the mobile apps yet, and turning sharing off cannot recall copies someone already made. Anthropic also does not document whether a public link can be created from the mobile apps, so share from claude.ai in a browser to be sure.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I share a chat in Claude?
Open the chat on claude.ai and click Share in the upper right corner. Enter email addresses under People with access and click Send to invite specific people, which works on every plan. On Free, Pro and Max you can also share a public link that anyone can open without a Claude account.
Can someone continue a Claude chat I shared?
No. Anthropic says shared chats are view only: recipients cannot continue the chat, copy it to their account or download files from it. They see a snapshot of the messages sent before you shared, including artifacts.
Does the person need a Claude account to see a shared chat?
For a public link, no: anyone with the link can view the snapshot. For an email invite, yes, but a free Claude account is enough, and the invite only opens for the email address you entered.
How do I unshare a Claude chat?
Open the share dialog and click Turn off; the link stops working for everyone right away. On Free, Pro and Max you can also go to Settings, Privacy and click Manage next to Shared chats to turn off sharing for any chat. Deleting the chat also removes the shared snapshot.
Are shared Claude chats public on Google?
Anthropic asks search engines not to index them: every shared chat page carries a noindex instruction, there is no directory of shared chats, and links are long random strings. It still advises treating a public link as public, because other sites can save copies.
Do new messages show up in a shared Claude chat?
No. A shared chat is a snapshot from the moment you shared it, and later messages stay private. To include them, open the share dialog and click Update shared chat, which replaces the snapshot for everyone who has access.
Can I share a Claude chat on a Team or Enterprise plan?
Yes, but only inside your organization. You can invite email addresses on your organization's domain or allow anyone at your organization to view it; public links are not available. Admins can turn sharing off for the organization and review shared chats in the audit log.
Bottom Line
Click Share on claude.ai, then invite people by email for a private share or, on Free, Pro and Max, create a public link anyone can open. Either way the other person gets a view-only snapshot, so update it when the chat moves on and turn it off when you are done. When a link is not the right fit, export the chat as a file: AI Toolbox does that for one chat free as TXT, and in more formats on Premium.
