OpenAI's 2026 Back to School offer gives eligible U.S. college and graduate students four free monthly billing periods of ChatGPT Plus, verified through SheerID, if they claim it by October 31, 2026. OpenAI's only ChatGPT Plus student deal in 2026 is the Back to School offer: four free monthly billing periods of Plus for eligible U.S. college and graduate students, claimed by October 31, 2026. OpenAI's pricing page lists no student tier; after the promotion Plus costs the normal $20 per month.

The offer attaches to whichever ChatGPT account is signed in during the claim, and OpenAI is "unable to change the account the promotion was applied to." How to Claim the ChatGPT Plus Student Offer
You claim the offer on OpenAI's Back to School page in a web or mobile web browser, not in the ChatGPT app and not with a code. The whole flow takes a few minutes when SheerID can verify your enrollment automatically.
Sign in to the ChatGPT account where you want Plus applied, or create one.
Select Claim free offer and follow the SheerID prompts. Depending on your school, SheerID checks enrollment records, sends you to your school's single sign-on, or asks for supporting documentation.
Return to the offer flow after verification and complete activation. New subscribers add a payment method; you are not charged for the four free months.
In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Billing, and confirm the account now shows Plus.
Verified but no Plus? Confirm you are signed in to the same account that entered the flow, then select Claim free offer again; it returns you to checkout or shows which account has the promotion. For verification or document problems, use the SheerID support form.
Already paying for Plus? Monthly Plus subscribers billed directly by ChatGPT can apply the offer to their current subscription. App Store and Google Play subscriptions cannot, while they stay store-billed. OpenAI's advice is to cancel in the store, keep Plus until that period ends, then check whether the offer is still available; the store steps are in how to cancel a ChatGPT subscription.
What Happens When the Four Free Months End?
Your Plus subscription renews at $20 per month on the card you added, unless you cancel before the renewal. Nothing reverts to Free on its own, so the card you add at activation is the one that gets charged.
Cancelling during the promotion: Plus stays active through the end of the current monthly billing period. After the cancellation takes effect, "any remaining promotional months are forfeited." Cancelling in month two means you lose months three and four.
Cancelling near the end: cancel during the fourth free period, at least 24 hours before the billing date, as OpenAI advises for any cancellation.
Your chats: cancelling does not delete conversations; your account moves to Free and your history stays.
ChatGPT Edu is a plan universities buy for their whole campus; ChatGPT Plus is a personal subscription you buy or get through the student offer. OpenAI does not publish an Edu price; its pricing FAQ calls Edu "an affordable plan that lets universities deploy AI across their campus communities," arranged through OpenAI's sales team.

The practical difference is ownership: an Edu workspace belongs to the school, so keep what you want after graduation in a personal account or exported files. Edu also unlocks OpenAI's College Student plugin for study guides, quizzes, and flashcards in Work, "available through ChatGPT Edu and ChatGPT for Teachers district deployments."
Study Mode and Other Free ChatGPT Features for Students
Study mode is free: OpenAI makes it available "across ChatGPT plans globally on web, iOS, and Android" with every model. Instead of handing over an answer, it asks what you know, explains in layers, and checks your understanding.
Turn it on: on the web, type @study in the composer and pick Study, or go straight to chatgpt.com/studymode. On iOS and Android, tap + and select Study.
Where it does not work: Temporary Chats, GPTs, and Projects. Study mode only runs in a regular conversation.
Interactive quizzes: since August 14, 2026, on all consumer plans and Edu, on web and mobile.

If you study outside the U.S. or miss the October 31 deadline, there is no other ChatGPT Plus student discount, but OpenAI runs free programs worth checking. Ignore sites selling "student discount codes"; the official offer has no code.

Study mode does not run inside Projects, so a semester of study-mode chats ends up in ChatGPT's main chat list. ChatGPT's Projects and built-in search work well for a single course. A free-plan setup: one root folder for the semester with a subfolder per course, and a second root folder for everything else. Limitations and What OpenAI Has Not Published
The student offer needs no third-party tool: OpenAI's page, SheerID, and ChatGPT billing are the whole process. What OpenAI has not published:

AI Toolbox has limits too: it runs only in desktop Chromium browsers, not the ChatGPT mobile apps, Firefox, or Safari, and it does not change ChatGPT's models or message limits.
