Claude Cowork vs Chat vs Claude Code: What Each Does (2026)

Claude chat is the conversation you have on claude.ai and the apps, on every plan including Free. Claude Cowork "brings Claude Code's agentic capabilities to knowledge work beyond coding": you hand it a multi-step task and it works through files and apps until it is done, on paid plans only. Claude Code is the same agent built for software, running in your terminal, IDE, the desktop app and the web (Anthropic Help Center, October 2026). Since September 16, 2026, Anthropic has been merging Cowork and chat into one Claude, starting with Pro and Max.

This guide explains what each one is for, where it runs, which plans include it, how usage limits apply, and what changed in 2026, including the October 6 switch that made Cowork tasks on Pro and Max run in Anthropic's cloud. Anthropic's own pages disagree in places because the product moved fast this year; where they do, this guide follows the newest Help Center article and says so. Sources are linked at the end.

What Is the Difference Between Claude Cowork and Chat?

In Anthropic's words: "In regular chat, Claude responds to your messages but can't access your files directly. In Cowork, Claude has permission to read, edit, and create files in folders you specify." That access is what lets Cowork finish a task instead of only describing how to do it.

Chat is a conversation: you ask, Claude answers, one turn at a time. Cowork uses "the same agentic architecture that powers Claude Code, with no terminal required." Instead of replying to each prompt, Claude breaks a job into steps, works through them, and hands back a finished result. Anthropic lists what that means in practice:

  • Your files: on desktop, Claude reads and writes local files in folders you connect, without uploads or downloads.
  • Finished deliverables: spreadsheets with working formulas, PowerPoint presentations and formatted documents.
  • Long and parallel work: it coordinates parallel workstreams and works on complex tasks "for extended periods without conversation timeouts or context limits interrupting your progress."
  • Work while you are away: in cloud sessions, "Claude keeps working when you close your laptop or step away," and scheduled tasks run in the cloud with no device online.

That distinction is fading. Anthropic says that in the new Claude experience, chat and Cowork "are merged into a single conversation, so you don't need to decide which option better suits your task before getting started."

Where Claude Cowork Runs and Which Plans Include It

Cowork is only on paid plans: Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Anthropic says "Desktop is the full Cowork experience, where Claude can also use your local files and browser," and Cowork also runs on web and mobile. By surface:

  • Claude Desktop for macOS, Windows and Linux (beta): all paid plans.
  • Web and Claude Mobile: Pro, Max and Team (in beta on Team), and Enterprise when an owner enables it.
  • Claude in Chrome side panel: all paid plans; on Enterprise an owner has to enable Claude in Chrome and Cowork in the cloud. Anthropic says the side panel "runs as a Claude Cowork session."

Local file access, browser use and computer use work through the Claude desktop app. Local connectors and plugins that include local MCP servers also work through the desktop app only. Claude Desktop needs macOS 13 (Ventura) or later, Windows 10 or later, or Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or Debian 12 or later on Linux; Cowork on Linux also needs hardware virtualization, about 25 GB of free disk space and at least 8 GB of RAM. Our guide to installing Claude Desktop walks through setup.

A short history

  • January 12, 2026: research preview on Claude Desktop for macOS, Max plans only, running locally in an isolated virtual machine. Pro followed on January 16.
  • April 9, 2026: "generally available on macOS and Windows through the Claude Desktop app."
  • July 7, 2026: available on web and mobile, with sessions running remotely in beta.
  • September 16, 2026: "Claude Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude," rolling out on Pro and Max first.
  • October 6, 2026: new Cowork tasks on Pro and Max run in the cloud. The "Only on your computer" option was removed and cannot be switched back.

Is Claude Cowork Merging With Chat?

Yes. Anthropic announced on September 16, 2026 that "Claude Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude," so that "what you could previously only do in Claude Cowork is available from any conversation." It is rolling out on Pro and Max first, and Anthropic says Team and Free plans "will follow soon," without a date.

The new experience has a few documented gaps. Anthropic lists that adding from GitHub is not supported, branching a conversation is not available, Dispatch is not available to new users, and incognito chats open in the previous experience, "so Claude can't create files or run code in them." While it rolls out, usage "may be measured slightly differently for accounts that have it and accounts that don't."

Where Does Cowork Run Your Work, and Is It Safe?

On Pro and Max, new Cowork tasks run in "an isolated environment on Anthropic's servers, separate from your computer and your network." Each session gets its own sandbox that is destroyed when the session ends, and all outgoing traffic passes through a mandatory proxy. Anthropic adds a caveat worth reading twice: "Isolation protects your computer; it doesn't change what Claude can read or do through the access you've granted."

Team and Enterprise can still run local sessions, where code runs in a dedicated Linux virtual machine on your computer. Anthropic notes that work in the cloud, including local files the desktop app opens, is processed on Anthropic's servers rather than staying on your machine. If you need new work to stay on your own computer, Anthropic's advice is to "use Claude Code in the desktop app."

You also choose how much Claude does on its own. Cowork has three approval modes: Manually approve, Automatically approve, where "Claude reviews each action for safety" and blocks anything it judges unsafe, and Skip all approvals, where "nothing checks its actions automatically." Auto is the default on Pro, Max and Team, and Manual on Enterprise. Claude needs your explicit permission before permanently deleting files, and file access is limited to folders you connect. Computer use, in beta on Pro and Max, is different: Anthropic says it "has no sandbox between Claude and what's on your screen."

Keep the Claude chats behind your work organized: AI Toolbox (formerly Claude Toolbox) adds folders, full-text search and export to Claude on claude.ai in Chrome. Search shows 5 results free and unlimited on Premium. 40,000+ users, 4.7/5 on the Chrome Web Store. Add AI Toolbox to Chrome →

What Is Claude Code, and When Should You Use It Instead?

Anthropic describes Claude Code as "an agentic coding tool that reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and integrates with your development tools," available in the terminal, IDE, desktop app and browser. It is included with Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans or a Claude Console account, and is not on the Free plan.

Anthropic draws the line between the two agents plainly. Claude Code "is built for software engineering," covering writing, debugging and shipping code, with integrations for GitHub and IDEs such as VS Code and JetBrains. Cowork "is built for non-coding knowledge work," such as research, analysis, document creation and other multi-step tasks. In the desktop app, tasks like fixing bugs, updating dependencies, running tests or opening pull requests route to Code, while research, document editing and spreadsheet work stay in Cowork.

When used in your terminal, Claude Code runs locally and "asks for permission before making changes to your files or running commands." That local option is the main reason to choose it for sensitive work now that Cowork on Pro and Max runs in the cloud.

Claude Plans and Prices for Chat, Cowork and Code

Chat is free; Cowork and Claude Code start with Pro at $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front), according to Anthropic's pricing page in October 2026. Prices exclude tax.

Usage limits reset on a rolling five-hour window, with weekly limits on paid plans, and Anthropic says activity "across Claude on web, desktop, mobile, and Claude Code all draws from the same pool." Agentic work costs more of that pool: Anthropic says "agentic tasks consume more capacity than regular chat." Our guides to Claude pricing plans and Claude usage limits go deeper.

Do Projects, Memory and Artifacts Work in Cowork?

Yes, with conditions. Anthropic says projects "work the same way in Cowork and in Claude," and memory "is shared between Chat and Claude Cowork when Cowork runs in the cloud."

  • Projects: group related tasks with their own files, context, instructions and memory. Projects tied to a local folder support Cowork sessions on desktop only. See our Claude Projects guide.
  • Memory: shared with chat for cloud sessions; local Cowork sessions on your computer "don't use memory." See how Claude memory works.
  • Artifacts: artifacts made in Cowork on or after August 19, 2026 work like any other artifact. Cowork sessions themselves cannot be shared, but individual artifacts can.
  • Connectors, skills and plugins: supported, with plugins on all paid plans. Local MCP servers do not run in cloud sessions.

Where AI Toolbox Fits

AI Toolbox is a Chrome extension, so it works where Claude runs in your browser: claude.ai in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and Arc. It does not run inside the Claude desktop app, the mobile apps or Claude Code. Whatever Anthropic merges into the chat window, the conversations you keep on claude.ai still pile up, and that is the part AI Toolbox organizes.

Premium for the Claude module is $9.99 per month or $99 once. These are extension features, not a Claude subscription, and AI Toolbox does not add Cowork capabilities to any plan.

Limitations and What Anthropic's Own Tools Do Well

Chat, Cowork and Claude Code together cover conversation, hands-off knowledge work and coding, and none of them needs an extension. The limits are Anthropic's. Cowork and Code are not on the Free plan, Cowork uses more of your limits than chat, Pro and Max can no longer keep new Cowork tasks on their own computer, and the merged experience is still rolling out with documented gaps. Some of Anthropic's pages also lag behind: its install guide and product matrix still describe Cowork as desktop-only or running in a local virtual machine, which no longer matches the October 2026 Help Center for Pro and Max. If a screen in your account differs from this guide, the newest Help Center article is the one to trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Claude Cowork and Claude chat?

In chat, Claude responds to your messages but cannot access your files directly. In Cowork, Claude can read, edit and create files in folders you connect and works through multi-step tasks until they are done. Since September 16, 2026, Anthropic has been merging the two into one Claude, starting with Pro and Max.

Is Claude Cowork free?

No. Anthropic says Cowork is available to paid plans only: Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually. The Free plan includes chat, but not Cowork or Claude Code.

Does Claude Cowork only work in the desktop app?

No. Cowork also runs on web and mobile on Pro, Max and Team, and on Enterprise when an owner enables it. The desktop app is the full experience, because only there can Claude use your local files, your browser and computer use.

Does Claude Cowork run on my computer or in the cloud?

Since October 6, 2026, new Cowork tasks on Pro and Max run in an isolated cloud sandbox on Anthropic's servers, and the local-only option was removed. Team and Enterprise can still run local sessions in a virtual machine. For new work that must stay on your computer, Anthropic recommends Claude Code in the desktop app.

Should I use Claude Cowork or Claude Code?

Use Claude Code for software engineering: writing, debugging and shipping code inside a repository. Use Cowork for non-coding knowledge work such as research, analysis, documents and spreadsheets. Both use the same agentic approach and both need a paid plan.

Does Claude Cowork use more of my usage limit?

Yes. Anthropic says agentic tasks consume more capacity than regular chat, because Claude coordinates multiple sub-agents and tool calls, and every step uses tokens. Chat, Cowork and Claude Code all draw from the same usage pool on your plan.

Can I share a Claude Cowork session?

No. Anthropic says Cowork sessions cannot be shared with others, but you can share individual artifacts. Regular Claude chats can be shared by email invite or public link; see our guide to sharing a Claude chat.

Bottom Line

Chat is where you talk to Claude, Cowork is where you hand it a task, and Claude Code is where it works on your code. Chat is free; the two agents need Pro or above and use more of your limits. With Cowork now merging into chat and running in the cloud by default on Pro and Max, the practical question is less "which app" and more "does this need my files, my code, or neither." For the conversations that pile up along the way, AI Toolbox adds folders, search and export on claude.ai.
