How to download a ChatGPT answer as an MP3

AI Toolbox adds a Download as MP3 button to the row of icons under every ChatGPT answer. Click it, pick a voice, and a small player appears where you can listen and save the file. Step by step

  1. Find the download button under an answer

    Open a chat. Under each of ChatGPT's answers is a row of small icons, such as Copy and the thumbs. On older answers, the row appears when you move your mouse over the answer.

    AI Toolbox adds an icon to that row: an arrow pointing down into a tray. Point at it to see its name.

    You should see: A label that says Download as MP3.

  2. Open the voice menu

    Click the Download as MP3 icon. A menu opens with a list of voices, each with a short description.

    On the free plan, you can use Ember. The other voices are dimmed with a small star, which means they are Premium. The top of the menu shows how many of your 3 free downloads you have used today, for example 1/3 today.

    You should see: A menu titled Download as MP3 with the voice list and, at the bottom, Download All Messages.

  3. Pick a voice

    Click Ember. On Premium, you can click any of the 9 voices.

    You should see: A card that says Generating audio appears under the answer, with a timer. Long answers can take a little while.

  4. Listen to the answer

    When the audio is ready, a small player appears at the right end of the row of icons under the answer. It shows the voice name, like Ember. Click Play (the triangle button) to listen. Click anywhere on the bar to jump to that part.

    You should see: The player shows the time played, the total length and the voice name.

  5. Save the audio file

    In the player, click the download icon near the right end. Your browser saves the file to your computer. It is named after the voice, for example Ember.mp3.

    Click the X at the end of the player to close it. Its label is Close player.

    You should see: The new file in your browser's downloads list.

  6. Save every answer at once (Premium)

    Open the voice menu again and click Download All Messages at the bottom. AI Toolbox makes audio for every ChatGPT answer in the chat, one after another, with your last used voice.

    When it is done, all the audio files are saved together in one ZIP file (a single file that holds many files).

    On the free plan, this button has a Premium badge and opens an upgrade window.

    You should see: The message Generating audio files..., then a ZIP file such as conversation_audio_Ember.zip in your downloads.

  7. Play the last answer with a shortcut

    First click an empty part of the page, so you are not typing in the message box. Then press Cmd+Shift+L on Mac or Ctrl+Shift+L on Windows.

    AI Toolbox makes audio for the last answer in the chat with your last used voice. Click Play in the player to listen.

    You should see: The Generating audio card under the last answer, then the player.

    The shortcut does nothing while you are typing in a text box. On the free plan, it counts as one of your 3 daily downloads.

If something doesn't look right

I don't see the download icon

It is only under ChatGPT's answers, not under your own messages. On older answers, move your mouse over the answer so its row of icons appears. If it is still missing, refresh the page.

An upgrade window opened when I picked a voice

Either you picked a Premium voice, or you already used your 3 free downloads today. Pick Ember, or wait until tomorrow, when your free count starts again. Premium removes the daily limit.

The keyboard shortcut does nothing

The shortcut is ignored while you are typing in the message box. Click an empty part of the page first, then press Cmd+Shift+L on Mac or Ctrl+Shift+L on Windows. The chat also needs at least one answer from ChatGPT.

It says Failed to download voice message

The audio could not be made this time. Wait a moment and try again. Very long answers take longer, so keep the tab open until the player appears.

Clicking the icon on a voice chat saved a file right away

For messages from a ChatGPT voice conversation, the button saves the original recording straight away, with no voice menu. This is free and does not count toward your daily limit.
