How to get a sound when ChatGPT finishes answering

AI Toolbox can play a sound when ChatGPT finishes an answer while you are in another tab. Open AI Toolbox Settings, go to Notifications, and switch on Notify when response is ready. It is off until you turn it on. The free plan uses the Chime sound. Premium adds 10 more sounds and a volume control.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Open AI Toolbox Settings

Click the round AI Toolbox button in the bottom-right corner of ChatGPT. A search box called Command Palette opens. Type settings and press Enter.

You should see: A window called Settings.

  2. Step 2: Go to the Notifications section

Scroll down in the Settings window to the section called Notifications. It has a small bell next to its name.

You should see: The Notifications heading with one switch under it.

  3. Step 3: Turn on the alert

Click the switch next to Notify when response is ready so it turns on. It stays off until you turn it on.

You should see: A set of sounds called Notification Sound and a Volume bar appear under the switch.

  4. Step 4: Pick a sound

Click the small play button on a sound to hear it. Click the sound itself to choose it.

On the free plan, Chime is yours. The other 10 sounds show a small lock and open an upgrade window. On Premium, you can choose any sound and move the Volume slider.

You should see: A check mark on the sound you chose.

  5. Step 5: Try it with a real answer

Close the Settings window. Ask ChatGPT a question, then switch to another tab in your browser, or minimize the window, while ChatGPT answers.

You should see: When the answer is done, the sound plays and the ChatGPT tab's title flashes Notification! for a few seconds.

No sound plays while the ChatGPT tab is open in front of you. That is on purpose: you can already see the answer.

That's it. You have finished every tutorial in this section.

If something doesn't look right

No sound plays when ChatGPT finishes

The sound only plays when the ChatGPT tab is in the background, such as when another tab is open or the window is minimized. Check that Notify when response is ready is on, that your computer's sound is up, and that the ChatGPT tab is not muted in your browser.

I had another app on top of ChatGPT and heard nothing

If the ChatGPT tab is still the open tab in its window, the browser counts it as visible, even with another app on top. Switch to a different tab in the browser, or minimize the window, before ChatGPT finishes.

I can't move the Volume slider

On the free plan the volume is fixed at 80%. Change your computer's volume instead, or upgrade to Premium to set the Volume yourself.

I don't get a pop-up on my desktop

AI Toolbox plays a sound and flashes the tab's title. It does not show a pop-up from your computer. Keep the ChatGPT tab open in your browser so the sound can play.

Free and Premium

The alert is free with the Chime sound at a fixed volume. Premium adds 10 more sounds (11 in total) and lets you set the Volume.

  • Free: the Chime sound at a fixed 80% volume.
  • Premium: all 11 sounds and a Volume control.
  • Plays only when the ChatGPT tab is in the background. The switch is off until you turn it on.

What ChatGPT does on its own

The ChatGPT desktop app for Mac can notify you when an answer finishes in the background, which OpenAI says is useful with slower reasoning models. On the web, ChatGPT's own notification settings cover push and email alerts for scheduled tasks.

AI Toolbox adds a sound right in the chatgpt.com browser tab, so you get an alert when an answer is ready without installing the desktop app.
