How to run prompt chains in Claude
A prompt chain is a list of prompts that AI Toolbox sends to Claude one after another. Create one in Manage Chains with New chain, add a box for each step, and save. Then type .. in the message box and pick the chain. AI Toolbox waits for each answer before it sends the next step. Free keeps 2 chains.
Step by step
Step 1: Open Manage Chains
Open claude.ai on a new chat or an open chat. In the bottom-right corner of the page there is a round AI Toolbox button. Click it. A list of features opens. Click Manage Chains.
You should see: A window called Manage Chains.
Step 2: Start a new chain
Click New chain.
You should see: A form with a Name box and a Steps section.
Step 3: Add your steps
Type a name for the chain. In the first step box, write the first prompt. Click Add step for each extra prompt, up to 25.
Use {{topic}} style words for values that change. You fill each one in once, and it goes into every step.
You should see: One box for each step, numbered in order.
Step 4: Save the chain
Click Add at the bottom of the form.
You should see: Your chain as a card showing how many steps it has, with Run, Edit and Delete buttons.
Step 5: Start the chain from the message box
Close the window. Open a chat or a new chat and click in the message box. Type two dots: .. at the start of the box or after a space. Click your chain in the list.
If the chain has {{ }} values, a window opens. Type each value and click Run.
You should see: Step 1 is sent to Claude.
Step 6: Let it run
AI Toolbox waits until Claude finishes answering, then sends the next step. A small bar shows which step is running, for example Step 2/4.
Click Stop in that bar at any time to end the chain.
You should see: Each step and each answer appear in the chat in order.
That's it. You have finished every tutorial in this section.
If something doesn't look right
Typing .. does nothing
Type .. at the very start of the message box or after a space. If nothing opens, open Settings, go to Prompts, and make sure Prompt tools is switched on.
The chain stopped with Chain failed or Timed out
Claude took too long or showed an error. Click Retry in the bar to send that step again, or Dismiss to stop. Check that you have not reached your Claude usage limit.

What Claude does on its own
Claude remembers your profile preferences in every chat, and paid plans can set instructions per project, so each answer follows your rules.
Those instructions shape every reply, but they do not send a series of prompts for you. A prompt chain in AI Toolbox does that part: it sends step after step and waits for each answer.

Questions people ask
What is a prompt chain in Claude?
A prompt chain is a saved series of prompts that AI Toolbox sends to Claude in order. For example: outline an article, write the draft, then shorten it. AI Toolbox sends step one, waits for Claude to finish, then sends the next, so you do not have to watch and paste each prompt.
How do I start a prompt chain in Claude?
Type two dots at the start of Claude's message box, or after a space, and pick your chain from the list that AI Toolbox shows. You can also click Run on the chain's card in Manage Chains. If the chain has variables, fill them in once and click Run.
How many prompt chains can I make for free?
The free plan of AI Toolbox keeps 2 prompt chains, and Premium keeps unlimited chains. On every plan a chain can have up to 25 steps. Chains are shared across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok, so the same chain works on each site with AI Toolbox.
Can I stop a Claude prompt chain halfway?
Yes. While an AI Toolbox chain runs, a small bar shows the current step with a Stop button. Click Stop and no more steps are sent. The steps already sent and Claude's answers stay in the chat. If a step fails, the bar offers Retry and Dismiss.
Can prompt chains use variables?
Yes. Write words in double curly braces, like {{topic}}, in any step of an AI Toolbox chain. When you run the chain, a window asks for each value once, and AI Toolbox fills it into every step before sending. This makes one chain useful for many different topics.
