Step by step

  1. Step 1: Open Manage Chains

Click the round button in the bottom-right corner. In the AI Toolbox list, click Manage Chains.

If there is no Manage Chains row, open Settings in the same list and switch on Prompt tools.

You should see: A window called Manage Chains. If it is empty, it says No chains yet.

  2. Step 2: Create a chain

Click New chain and type a Name, for example Blog post.

Under Steps, write the first prompt in the box that says Write the prompt for this step. Click Add step for each next prompt.

You should see: Numbered step boxes, one for each prompt.

  3. Step 3: Save the chain

Click Add at the bottom. On the free plan, you can save 2 chains.

You should see: Your chain in the list, with the number of steps and a Run button.

  4. Step 4: Start the chain from the message box

Close the window and click in Grok's message box. Type .. (two dots) at the start of the box or after a space.

A list of your chains opens. Click one, or use the arrow keys and press Enter. You can also click Run in Manage Chains.

You should see: If a step has a word in curly braces, the window Fill in prompt variables asks for it once.

  5. Step 5: Let the chain run

AI Toolbox types the first step, sends it, and waits for Grok to finish answering. Then it sends the next step, until the last one.

A small box shows the progress. Click Stop in that box to end the chain early.

You should see: A progress box such as Step 2/4, and Grok's answers arriving one by one.

That's it. You have finished every tutorial in this section.

If something doesn't look right

Typing .. does nothing

Type the two dots at the start of the message box or after a space. Also check that Prompt tools is on in Settings, under Prompts.

An upgrade window opened when I saved my chain

You already have 2 chains, which is the free limit. Your draft is still there. Close the upgrade window with Maybe later, then delete a chain you don't need, or upgrade to Premium.

The chain stopped and says Timed out

Grok took too long to answer a step. Click Retry in the progress box to send that step again. Stay on the chat page while the chain runs.

It says A name and at least one step are required.

Give the chain a name and write at least one step, then click Add again.

Free and Premium

The free plan saves 2 chains. Premium saves unlimited chains. Each chain can have up to 25 steps.

  • Free: 2 chains.
  • Premium: unlimited chains.
  • Up to 25 steps per chain. Chains are the same on grok.com and X.

What Grok does on its own

Grok answers one message at a time. You send a prompt, read the reply, then type the next one yourself. Custom instructions can shape every answer, but they do not send prompts for you.

An AI Toolbox chain sends a planned series of prompts in order and waits for each answer before sending the next.
