How to export a Claude chat

AI Toolbox adds an Export button to the top of every Claude chat, next to Share. Click it, choose a format and click Export, and the chat downloads as a file named after its title. The free plan exports Text. Premium adds Markdown, JSON and PDF, and can export many chats at once.

Step by step

  1. Open the chat you want to save

    Click the chat in Claude's list on the left side of the page so it opens.

    You should see: The chat on screen, with Claude's Share button at the top right.

  2. Click Export

    At the top right of the chat, next to Share, click Export.

    You should see: A window called Select Export Format.

  3. Choose a format

    Click Text for a plain text file. This is the free format.

    On Premium you can also pick Markdown (keeps headings and code blocks), JSON (for tools and apps) or PDF (ready to print or share).

    You should see: A dot next to the format you picked.

  4. Download the file

    Click Export at the bottom of the window. Wait a moment for long chats.

    You should see: The window closes and the file appears in your Downloads folder, named after the chat's title.

If something doesn't look right

I don't see the Export button

Export sits next to Claude's Share button, which only shows in a chat that has messages. It does not show on the new chat page, in incognito chats or on Projects pages. Open a saved chat and wait a second for it to appear.

An upgrade window opened when I clicked Export

You picked Markdown, JSON or PDF, which are Premium. Click Maybe later. The export window is still open, so pick Text and click Export again.

The PDF export failed for a very long chat

Very long chats can be too big to build as a PDF in the browser. Export the same chat as Markdown or Text instead, or try the PDF again later.

Nothing downloaded

Check your browser's downloads list (Cmd+Shift+J on Mac, Ctrl+J on Windows). If the browser asked where to save, the file may be waiting there. If you see Failed to export chat. Please try again., refresh the page and export again.

Free and Premium

Exporting a chat as Text is free, with no limit on how many chats you export. Markdown, JSON and PDF are Premium. Exporting many chats at once from Manage Chats or a whole folder is also Premium.

  • Free: unlimited single-chat exports in Text, from the chat or by ticking one chat in Manage Chats or Search History.
  • Premium: Markdown, JSON and PDF, plus exporting many chats or whole folders as one ZIP file.
  • Every file includes the chat title, a link back to the chat, the dates and all messages.

What Claude does on its own

Claude can export all of your data at once. In Settings, under Privacy, the Export data button sends a download link to your email, and the link expires 24 hours after it arrives. It covers your whole account, which is good for a full backup.

AI Toolbox is for saving one chat right now. The file downloads straight away from the chat you are reading, in the format you pick.
