How to export a Grok chat to a file

Open the Grok chat you want to save. Click the round button in the bottom-right corner, then Export this chat. Pick a format and click Export. The file downloads to your computer. Text files are free, with no limit on how many. Markdown, JSON and PDF are Premium.

Step by step

  1. Open the chat you want to save

    On grok.com or on x.com/i/grok, open the chat. It must be open on the page, not just listed on the left.

    You should see: The chat's messages on the page.

  2. Click Export this chat

    Click the round button in the bottom-right corner. In the AI Toolbox list, click Export this chat.

    You should see: A window called Export Conversation that asks you to Choose format.

  3. Pick a format

    Text is picked for you and is free. Markdown, JSON and PDF have a Premium label on the free plan.

    Text is plain and opens anywhere. PDF is good for sharing or printing. Markdown keeps headings and lists.

    You should see: Your chosen format is highlighted.

  4. Click Export

    Click Export. The button says Exporting... for a moment, then the file downloads.

    Your browser saves it where your downloads usually go.

    You should see: The message Export complete and a new file in your downloads.

  5. Export from the chat's menu on grok.com (optional)

    On grok.com, you can export a chat without opening it. On the left side of the page, move your mouse over a chat and click the three dots that appear. Click Export.

    On X, use Manage Chats from the AI Toolbox list instead. Every chat there has its own export button.

    You should see: The same Export Conversation window.

If something doesn't look right

It says Open a chat to export

No chat is open on the page, for example on a new, empty chat. Open the chat you want first, then try again. Or use Manage Chats to export any chat from the list.

An upgrade window opened when I clicked Export

You picked Markdown, JSON or PDF, which are Premium. Close the upgrade window with Maybe later, pick Text and click Export again. Text is free.

The button says Failed - Retry

The export did not finish, often because of a network hiccup. Click the button again. If a very long chat fails as PDF, try Text or Markdown.

I don't see Export in the chat's three-dot menu on X

That menu item is on grok.com only. On X, click the round button and use Export this chat for the chat you have open, or Manage Chats for any other chat.

Free and Premium

Exporting a chat as Text is free and unlimited. Markdown, JSON and PDF are Premium. Exporting many chats or a whole folder at once is also Premium.

  • Each file includes the chat title, a link back to the chat and the date of each message.

What Grok does on its own

xAI's FAQ says you own your inputs and Grok's outputs, and it explains how to delete chats on grok.com, on the apps and on X. It does not describe a button that saves a chat to a file.

AI Toolbox adds that button on both grok.com and Grok inside X, with a free Text option and Premium Markdown, JSON and PDF.
