How to export a Gemini chat

Open the chat, click the three dots in the top-right corner of the page and choose Export Conversation. Pick a format and click Export, and the whole chat downloads as a file named after the chat. The free plan saves Text files. Premium adds Markdown, JSON and PDF.

Step by step

  1. Open the chat you want to save

    On the left side of Gemini, click the chat you want to export. It opens on the right.

    You should see: The chat's messages, with its title at the top of the page.

    A brand new, empty chat has nothing to export yet, so it has no menu.

  2. Open the chat's menu

    Look at the top-right corner of the page, above the chat. Click the three dots there.

    You should see: A menu that starts with Add to Folder, Export Conversation and Bookmarks, above Gemini's own options.

  3. Click Export Conversation

    Click Export Conversation. A window with the same name opens.

    You should see: The words Choose format and four choices: Text, Markdown, JSON and PDF.

  4. Choose a format

    Text is picked for you and is free. It is a plain file that opens on any computer.

    Markdown, JSON and PDF are Premium. On the free plan, picking one and clicking Export opens an upgrade window. Click Maybe later to go back, pick Text and click Export again.

    You should see: A dot next to the format you picked.

  5. Click Export

    Click Export. The button says Exporting... for a moment, then the window closes.

    You should see: A new file in your browser's downloads, named after the chat.

  6. Open the file

    Open your Downloads folder, or click the file in your browser's download list.

    In a Text file, your messages are marked [USER] and Gemini's answers are marked [GEMINI]. Every message has its date.

    You should see: The full chat, from the first message to the last.

If something doesn't look right

I don't see Export Conversation in the menu

You may have opened the three dots on a chat in the left-side list. In that menu, AI Toolbox only adds Add to Folder, Smart Tags and Carry this chat forward. Open the chat first, then use the three dots in the top-right corner of the page.

An upgrade window opened when I picked Markdown or PDF

The free plan saves chats as Text only. Click Maybe later, keep Text picked and click Export. Premium unlocks Markdown, JSON and PDF.

It says the chat is too long for a PDF

Very long chats can be too big to build as a PDF inside your browser. Export the chat as Markdown or Text instead. Both keep every message.

The button says Failed - Retry

Click the button again. If it fails twice, refresh the Gemini page, open the chat again and repeat the steps. Make sure you are still signed in to Gemini.

I want to export many chats at once

Use Manage Chats in the AI Toolbox window to tick many chats and save them in one ZIP file. Exporting more than one chat at once is a Premium feature. See Manage Chats.

Exporting one chat is free as a Text file. Premium adds Markdown, JSON and PDF, and lets you export many chats at once from Manage Chats or a whole folder with Export Folder.

Gemini can send a single answer to Google Docs: under a response, choose Share & export, then Export to Docs, and it saves a new doc in Google Drive. For everything at once, Google Takeout can download your Gemini data, which can take from a few hours to a few days to prepare.
