How to find a word in a long Gemini chat
AI Toolbox adds a Find in this chat bar to Gemini. It searches the whole conversation you have open, including parts the page has not loaded yet, which your browser's find can miss. Open it from the round AI Toolbox button, type a word, and press Enter to jump from match to match. It is free.
Step by step
Step 1: Open Find in this chat
Open the chat you want to search on gemini.google.com. Click the round AI Toolbox button in the bottom-right corner of the page. A window called AI Toolbox opens with a list of features.
Click Find in this chat. It is right under Search History.
You should see: A small find bar at the top right of the chat, with the cursor in its box.
Shortcut: press Option+Shift+F on Mac or Alt+Shift+F on Windows. Ctrl+F still opens your browser's own find.
Step 2: Type a word
Type a word or a few words you remember from the chat. You do not need to press Enter yet. The bar counts the matches as you type.
Capital letters and accents do not matter, so cafe also finds Café. The bar also finds your word inside longer words.
You should see: The number of matches next to the box, for example 11 results. No results means the words are not in this chat.
Step 3: Jump to a match
Press Enter. The chat scrolls to the first match and colors it orange, and the bar shows where you are. Each Enter after that moves on to the next match.
Other matches in the same message are tinted yellow, so you can see them all at once.
You should see: The match in orange on your screen, and a count such as 2 of 11 in the bar.
Step 4: Go to the next or previous match
Press Enter again for the next match, or Shift+Enter to go back one. You can also click the arrows in the bar: Next match points down and Previous match points up.
After the last match, the bar starts again at the first one. Parts of a long chat that the page had not loaded yet are brought into view for you.
You should see: The count changes and the chat moves to that match.
Step 5: Close the bar
Press Esc, or click Close (the X at the right end of the bar). The highlights go away and the chat stays where you are.
You should see: The chat without the bar or any highlights.
If you open another chat while the bar is open, it searches the new chat instead.
That's it. You have finished every tutorial in this section.
If something doesn't look right
It says Could not reach that message
The message may have been removed, or Gemini could not load that part of the chat. Press Enter to move to the next match, or scroll up a little and try again. The note Could not reach that message then goes away.
The shortcut does nothing
Another app or extension may use the same keys, or your browser did not set them. Open chrome://extensions/shortcuts (edge://extensions/shortcuts in Edge), find AI Toolbox and give "Find in the chat you are reading (on AI sites)" the keys you want. It works on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok.
The bar says Open a chat to search in it
The page you are on is not a chat, for example a home page or a settings page. Open the conversation you want to search and type again. The bar stays open while you switch.
The count is different from my browser's find
Find in this chat counts the whole conversation, including parts the page has not loaded, and only text you can read. The browser's find counts what is loaded right now, plus hidden labels and button names. So the two numbers can differ.
Free and Premium
Find in this chat is free on every plan. Nothing to upgrade.
- Free on every plan, on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok.
- It searches the one chat you have open. To search all your chats, use Search History.
- It matches text you can read. Hidden labels and image addresses are skipped.
- The shortcut can be changed at chrome://extensions/shortcuts. Ctrl+F stays your browser's own find.
Questions people ask
How do I search within a Gemini conversation?
Use Find in this chat from the AI Toolbox extension. Open the chat on gemini.google.com, open the bar from the round AI Toolbox button, and type a word. The bar counts every match in the whole conversation. Press Enter to jump from one match to the next, and Shift+Enter to go back.
Why does Ctrl+F miss words in a long Gemini chat?
Gemini can keep only part of a long conversation loaded in the page, and your browser's find only searches what is loaded. Find in this chat searches a full copy of the chat that AI Toolbox keeps in your browser, then brings the right message into view for you.
Is there a keyboard shortcut to find text in a Gemini chat?
Yes. Press Option+Shift+F on Mac or Alt+Shift+F on Windows while a Gemini chat is open. If nothing happens, set the keys yourself at chrome://extensions/shortcuts. Ctrl+F is left alone, so it still opens your browser's own find box. The bar works the same way however you open it.
Is Find in this chat free?
Yes. Find in this chat is free on every AI Toolbox plan, with no upgrade needed. It works the same way on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok. You only need the AI Toolbox extension installed in a desktop Chromium browser such as Chrome, Edge or Brave.
What is the difference between Find in this chat and Search History?
Find in this chat looks inside the one conversation you have open and walks you through every match in it. Search History looks through all your Gemini chats at once and shows which chats and messages contain your words. Use Search History to find the chat, then Find in this chat inside it.
Does Find in this chat send my conversation anywhere?
No. It searches a copy of the chat that AI Toolbox keeps in your browser. When you open the bar, it also reads the open chat once from Gemini itself, to catch new messages. Your words and your conversation are not sent to AI Toolbox.
